The Pink Wall and the Black Hole of Video Death:
Creative solutions with Enlux LED Par
Lighting Design and Installation by Jack Kelly of Eye Dialogue

Lighting Equipment Used
10 Enlux Blue LED Pars

I love a dramatic title. When facing a difficult technical puzzle, sometimes the dramatic helps the creative process. The problem was a black sound booth next to the stage that looked like a black hole and a pink wall that lingered in the back drop of the right corner of the stage, destroying the camera shots and distracting the audience’s focus.

Morning Star Ministries has recently purchased the hotel formerly part of Heritage, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakers’ Spiritual Graceland. The hotel remained unoccupied for nearly ten years except by vagrant kids looking for something to explore. After ten years of neglect anything would be difficult to rebuild. Morning Star has worked wonders and still has plenty of sweat ahead of them.

The current sanctuary is located in the main lobby. The stage is in the center of the room which blocks the view to the hallway to the Heritage’s city square. The large black box that towers stage right contains recording equipment for both studio work and recording the services. The room remains true to its heritage (wit intended). The original mauve and white décor has been repaired and polished. Stage left is open and the pink wall stands about thirty feet from stage.

“Morning Star Blue” is presented in most of their marketing material and in all signage. The black and the pink wall both break the continuity on stage. Painting the pink wall would be a bigger eye sore to the décor of the room and the black wall must match the dark navy back drop of the stage. The solution was found through the use of Blue Enlux LED Pars.

The difference is obvious after casually looking at the pictures. The Blue Enlux LED Pars show a dramatic color difference on camera even when place next to a 1k flood with a blue gel. I acknowledge that the par’s beam spread is much more focused than the floods, giving the Enlux Par an advantage. However it is using on 23 watts! The pure blue light even in the demo shots completely transforms the pink wall into a pleasant blue that matches the stage theme and Morning Star Blue. The black wall now clearly carries the blue tint matching the dark Navy backdrop. Without a brush, the walls become chameleons changing the quality of color on the camera without awkward décor changes in the room.

The Blue Enlux LED Par has an excellent quality of light. At only 23 watts and a 50,000 hour lamp life, the Enlux Par has a low operational cost. Although the bulb has a much higher purchase price (retail $90), the five year operation cost is significantly lower than incandescent fixtures. Dimming is possible by passing 110V through “low voltage dimmers” such as the Lutron Skylark SELV-300P, a 300W single pole dimmer for use with electronic low voltage transformers (about $40 online price). Not to mention, the bulb can be handled after hours of operation, providing safety to young helpers. Controlling the color of the room, it truly demonstrates the ability of LED to paint with light.
