Lighting Coors Light at Lowes Motor Speedway

The first thing anyone talks about when they enter Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina is the overwhelming atmosphere. Well the first thing they slur their speech about anyway. The sounds, the smells, the LIGHTS! Its an experience that is in a class of its own and is an institution rooted in tradition, but this year Coors Light broke through the fluorescent jungle by introducing the Coors Light Party Deck. Four spectacular levels of perfect views, great fun and 16 foot tall screen printed graphics all artfully lit by Color Kinetics line of ColorGraze PowerCore and iW Profile g2 fixtures driven with the latest iPlayer controller. This addition definitely takes the cake for the best looking section on the speedway.

Collaborating on the installation was Barbizon Charlotte, Eye Dialogue and Gelbach Designs of Charlotte, North Carolina. The trickiest part of the project was to find a material that would transpose and evenly distribute the light shooting from behind in order to be seen in front. Gelbach created a hybrid vinyl that would do just this. In three huge 16' x 45' panels. Each full color panel had the Coors Light logo, Coors Light bottles and their famous Rocky Mountains in bright and vivid colors. The next step was to create a design that would allow light to extend the full length and height of the panel while accentuating special attributes of the graphics. The lowest level for example, had mountains on each side coming in and met in the middle with an upright bottle. This bottle needed to be lit by white light while the mountains stayed blue. This is where the different lengths and types of fixtures came in handy. For smaller, more concentrated areas we needed to use 1' fixtures that could be controlled a bit easier while the longer throws that needed to cover more space could be the 4' versions. Both fixtures called for the narrow lenses to be able to shoot down 20' of space. "We were very happy with the way that the light bounced around behind the panels," Said system integrator Andrew Fisher "especially the smooth transitions from the colored to the white light outputs." Using the same generation of fixtures helped the blending tremendously. Installers had toyed with the notion of using the RGB mix to create the white, but they knew that the warm glow of the iW Profile would be a much better fit. Both fixtures were also a great choice because of their durability and resistance to outdoor environments. These fixtures can withstand heavy downpours of rain or the occasional lager as well as take some good knocks from fans and not lose positioning.

This lighting showcase can be seen any seat across the speedway and is definitely setting the bar a little higher for other sponsors. Installers have a feeling this will set off a chain reaction and we will see some even more adventurous designs in the future. It might not make the sounds or the smells any better, but the Coors Light Party Deck sure makes life at Lowe's Motor Speedway just a little brighter.
